Signode PN2-2 Pneumatic Tensioner

The PN2-2 pneumatic tensioner for 2″ steel is a monster tool and popular in the mills.  It is also another version of the PN2-114, which is already a popular tensioner in the market. Both these tools are the same but set to accommodate different size strapping. However, there are reports from industry users who believe that it is disappointing that the tool can only pull about 1600 pounds of tension.

Signode’s PN2-2 is a one of a kind tool for 2” steel strapping.  The tool is designed in such a way that the nose of the tool pushes against the seal. However, this is not an apt tool for loads that get compressed. It is also not a great tool to pull metal rounds. Signode’s WP-2 is another standalone tensioner in the windlass style that can pull close to 8000 pounds of tension.

With disadvantages of stand-alone tensioners, which can tension only for specific kinds of strapping, the industry has begun switching over to combination pneumatic tools and battery operated tools. With battery-operated tools more expensive than pneumatic tools, industries with smaller budgets opt for pneumatic combination tools that are faster and efficient and find that these tools increase the productivity. The one disadvantage of pneumatic tools is that there are too many airlines running along the floor. This hinders the movement of operators.

Very few pneumatic tools accommodate 2” strapping and PN2-2 gets the job well done. As this is a tensioner, a separate sealer has to be used for the joints. The Signode NS-250-65L will be a good sealer that works well with 2” steel straps and also applies a single crimp seal effectively.  It also works well with heavy-duty applications and is also lighter in terms of force when compared to other sealers. However, a manual sealer can also be used.
